Master Plan (Oct. 28 th, 2008) SOCIAL / ECONOMIC / PHYSICAL: People - Health, Education, Children, Youth & Family Support; Play, Sports Arts & Culture. Work - Employment, Training, Enterprise. Place - Housing, Facilities & Infrastructural Development.
Low pupil no.s in many regeneration area schools. Low levels of literacy & ed. attainment at primary level. Poor attainment levels in secondary. Poor retention and participation rates in regeneration area schools. Early School Leaving a problem In regeneration areas – c. 17.9% State, Limerick 22.2% [HIA Report, 2008]. High % of Adults with functional literacy difficulties. Limited uptake at FE & HE Ed. Levels from Regeneration Areas.
Outcomes for education unsatisfactory. Many failing or being failed by education in Limerick City. While the focus of intense policy & investment, educational disadvantage in its various forms, remains a difficult and deep-rooted problem in parts of Limerick City, i.e. Regeneration areas.
A Manager of Education - to lead educational change in Limerick. Quality Early Years Education & After-School provision for regeneration areas. Development of an Early School Leaving strategy for the City. A more comprehensive system of SEN support ‘as required’. Access in schools to needs based counselling & therapeutic supports. Early Warning & Needs Support System: [LANS]. Education Infrastructure: Fast track school builds: School Accommodation Commission. Support the development of Community, Adult Education programmes & facilities.
UL, MIC, LIT, CLVEC - to promote greater pathways & progression to HE & FE. Digital Inclusion: Promotion of new technologies to address social exclusion. Radical re-thinking – to enhance Education & learning in Limerick [not all about resources but doing business differently]. Joined up thinking between Dept’s., Agencies & Providers. for the strategic planning & coordination of education resources & services.
