The Evolving European Real Estate Education Agenda – A Seventeen Year Retrospective Éamonn D’Arcy School of Real Estate and Planning, University of Reading Paloma Taltavull de La Paz University of Alicante

Introduction Presentation Provides a Seventeen Year Retrospective on The Evolving Real Estate Education Agenda in Europe Analysis based on the education related contributions made at the Annual European Real Estate Society Conferences between 1994 and 2009 and also at the pre-conference in This period has seen c onsiderable changes in the characteristics of real estate education in Europe.  There has been a significant expansion in the number of students and providers especially in countries with no tradition of real estate education  The balance of provision has shifted towards postgraduate modes incorporating both full-time and flexible delivery  There has been a shift towards the provision of Real Estate Education within a business school context

Introduction This presentation attempts to provide a benchmark of the evolution of the European real estate education agenda based on conference contributions It excludes the contributions made at the ERES Education Seminars It identifies a total of seventy six education specific contributions including one plenary session, five panel sessions and one keynote address

Early Years at the Pre-Conference in Reading – Real Estate Education was identified a core concern of the Future European Real Esate Society and The International Real Estate Society. Four Principal Areas of Contribution  Valuation Education  Establishing Real Estate Education in Countries with no Tradition of Provision  Relationships between Education Provision and the Requirements of Professional Bodies  International Comparisons in Provision

Key Topics  Internationalisation of Programmes and Curriculum.  Real Estate Education within a Business Education Context  Accreditation Issues  Real Estate and IT – Web Based Applications  Individual Country Experiences

– First and only Plenary Session on Real Estate Education  Organised by RICS  Focus on offering internationally recognised qualifications  Fostering Cross-Border Cooperation between Education Providers.  The RICS International Education Policy 2003 – First ERES Education Network Panel

Very Well Attended Education Panels a Key Feature of the Annual Conferences  Focus on Sharing International Experience  International Students  Developing Pan-European Platforms For Real Estate Education

Summary The mix of topics has shifted over time from a focus on concerns such as consistency in valuation education and the development of real estate education in a wide range of European countries to an increasing focus on issues related to internationalisation and employability. Need to Integrate the Annual Conference Contributions with Contributions made at the ERES Education Seminars from 2005 This will provide a more holistic overview of the evolving real estate education agenda in Europe.

The Challenge Take this experience and build on the contributions of the last seventeen years as a means of identifying what are the core requirements of a High Quality European Real Estate Education A key role for the ERES Education Seminar going Forward
