Bringing Vision and Change to Tulsa Community College (TCC) Biology Department, Tulsa Community College Tulsa, Oklahoma Melissa Masse, Jennifer Kneafsey, Mary Phillips, Patty Smith Institution Loo TCC is comprised of four campus locations, and is the largest 2-year college in Oklahoma. We offer 235 associate degree and certificate of completion programs. There were 17,876 students enrolled during Fall 2013, of which 2,332 (13%) declared STEM majors in the last academic year. TCC serves a diverse population. Black or African American (10%) American Indian or Alaska Native (8%) Hispanic or Latino (7%) Total Biology Faculty: are full time faculty members 70 are adjunct instructors Student: Faculty Ratio is 19:1. Demographics Vision and Change Success Strengths Our department is doing well in providing professional development for our full-time and adjunct faculty members. Our Biology team leaders presented active learning activities and ideas during the first set of workshops. Full-time and part-time faculty presented ideas during the 2 nd set of workshops. We offered day and evening workshops to accommodate varied teaching schedules. Faculty members from Oklahoma 4-year colleges were invited and attended. Areas for enhancement We have the most room for improvement regarding Independent Research Experiences. We have students involved with research through the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife, NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab and several local universities, but we’d like the number of participants to be much higher. Department Evaluation Rubric We would like to develop collaborations with other community colleges and other multi-campus college systems. We would like to share our experiences and learn from the successes others have achieved. Community colleges and multi-campus systems present unique challenges and opportunities, so collaborating with others who have similar situations would be very beneficial. There is not a specific expertise we are seeking, but we are always seeking additional content specific activities that we can add to the pool we are working to create for our faculty members. Our goal is to have a selection of active learning activities, case studies, discussions, and labs for each major content area that we can make available to our faculty to further bring Vision & Change to Tulsa Community College. Connections and Collaborations Midwest and Great Plains Regional Network The PULSE Midwest and Great Plains Regional Network is supported by award # from the National Science Foundation In 2012, we developed a Biology team led by one full-time faculty member from each of our four campuses. We received in-house grant funding to attend NABT and learn more about Vision & Change. We offered multiple workshops to share the Vision & Change recommendations with our colleagues in Biology and across other disciplines. We collected data to analyze the effectiveness of our workshops. We have received additional in-house grant funding to continue these workshops for ! What did we learn?
