Last Time- Using our key words and main ideas to anticipate According to the passage, how did Dick feel about the movie Blade Runner? 1.Look for the italicized text or something about movies in your main idea margins. 2.Re-read that section of the passage. 3.Which answer choice does the passage support? From line 82- Initially he was highly critical of the script for Blade Runner, and fought the studio over it. He died in 1982 just before the film’s release but he was ultimately pleased with the footage he had seen, saying that it perfectly captured the mood of the book.

Anticipate According to the passage, how did Dick feel about the movie Blade Runner? A.He thought it brilliantly tackled grand philosophical questions. B.He was unhappy with the script at first but liked the footage he saw from it. C.He was upset that it wasn’t as popular as the book on which it was based. D.He did not think it was well done as other film adaptations of his work.

There’s no historical info here… Paragraph 5 is talking about his contemporaries! Too strong. Nobody is being attacked Nope. Clearly about science fiction and literary acceptance. Helpful Hints: 1.Use your main ideas off to the side when comparing paragraphs. 2.When looking at a rhetorical device, try to think of the definition of that device and then get inside the author’s head. Hyperbole, by definition, is an overexaggeration. So if an author is employing hyperbole, he is probably trying to make his position/argument overly apparent and obvious.

Other topics- Adjectives vs. Adverbs on pg. 38 Adjectives describe a noun – This is an easy test. Adverbs describe a verb – I easily passed the test. – Almost always have an ‘ly’ Good is an adjective and well is an adverb.

Comparatives and Superlatives When comparing two people or things, use the comparative. – ‘er’ or ‘more’ When comparing three or more, use the superlative. Don’t get confused X Alaska is the larger of the FIFTY states X Of the TWO candidates, Julio is the most qualified for the position. This works for adverbs too…. As long as they take the ‘more’ and ‘most’

Prepositions Relationship between two words (usually nouns) – Direction – Location – Time Sometimes you might be asked to choose the right preposition based on context. – I have heard the song. – I have heard of the song – I have heard about the song.
