Roles of A Media Specialist Collaboration - It is crucial to the success of a library media program to have collaborative partnerships with teachers, parents, students, and the community. Academic achievement is higher when the media specialist is actively involved with the instructional program of the school. I have spent six years working with my team on interdisciplinary units and team projects. I work daily with another L.A. teacher and I find that collaboration is key to student success.
Roles of A Media Specialist Leadership- Media Specialists must be advocates for learning. This includes helping the school meet it’s mission, objectives, and strategies. A Media Specialist must always think about accountability. What is the impact of this activity, is it serving the needs of teachers and students, does it reflect the standards being taught? Must be a decision maker and take action for the good of the school. I have been Team Leader for three years and I enjoy being in a leadership role.
Roles of A Media Specialist Technology- Media Specialists seek, select, and utilize electronic resources and tools. They use their knowledge to instruct teachers and students in how to use them. A Media Specialist provides information on the ethical use of technology for information access, retrieval, and production.
Programs and Ideas to Promote Reading Book Fair (one a semester) Book Club Author Visits Book Talks Extended Hours (for parents to come in with the student)
Programs and Ideas to Promote Reading Young Hoosier Award Club Trivia Contests (winner receives a book, bookmark, pencil, sticker) Connect new movies with books (read the book then watch the movie after school.) Accelerated Reader points awards (students can “spend” their points to buy prizes)
Programs and Ideas to Promote Reading Monthly/Weekly Themes April- School Library Media Month Slogans posted around the school Examples: Get your library Your future your library Keep your library
Programs and Ideas to Promote Reading Have students help create posters, slogans, and bulletin boards to promote reading and monthly themes. Students that earn the most Accelerated Reader points get to go on a field trip to Border’s and lunch (each semester)
