President Richard Nixon During Nixon's second term, a small scandal turned into a presidential crisis. His reelection committee had wanted information about the democratic campaign plans. Members of Nixon's campaign orders “plumbers” to break into the head quarters of DNC to install telephone listening devices.

“The Plumbers” The plumbers were a secret unit. The were created by the white house, to fix leaks of classified information to the news media. They were formed in response to the publication of the Pentagon papers. These documents detailed the history of U.S involvement in the Vietnam war.

The Watergate Hotel This scandal got its name after five people broke into and entered the Democratic Nation committee headquarters at the Watergate hotel in Washington, D.C. on June 17, 1972.

Denial The White House denied any involvement. The president declared that “no one in the White House or administration was involved in this bizarre incident.”

The Washington Post Meanwhile, two news reporters from the Washington post, Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein publish series of articles that linked the burglary to Nixon's campaign.

Effect on the U.S The Watergate Scandal threatened the foundation of American democracy. Many people started questioning the government leaders. People were mostly shocked that the president would do something scheming and behind everyone's back.

Nixon Resigns After two years of bitter public debate over the Watergate scandals, President Nixon was tired of all the pressures from the public and leaders of his party. He became the first President in American history to resign. Nixon resigned on August 9, 1974.
