The Space Race By: Kristen Tune Kaylee Henley 4/24/08 F.Period

The Beginning. The space race started in 1957 when the United States and the Soviet Union were in a heated competition over who would conquer space first..The competition got started when the Soviet Union launched Spudnik 1. The presidents at the time were Dwight Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, and Richard Nixon. They all agreed that conquering outer space was very important.

The competition was on The space race became an important part of the culture, technological, and ideological rivalry between the United States and the Soviet Union during the cold war. President Kennedy wanted to beat the Soviets the Moon.

Spudnik 1 On October 4,1957 the Soviet Union successfully launched Spndnik 1 in to orbit. The Americans were worried that the Soviet Union would win the space wars.

United States pulling ahead Only a short time after Spunnik 1 was launched the United States hit a break thourgh.
