RNP Digital Video Overlay Network: Development and Launch Internet2 Fall Meeting September 2004 Guido Lemos de Souza Filho Digital Video Applications Lab (LAViD) Digital Video Working Group (GTVD) Rede Nacional de Pesquisa e Ensino Rede Nacional de Pesquisa e Ensino (RNP)

Outline  RNP GTVD Video Overlay Network  Context  Architecture  Initial Results  RNP GTVD and University of Tennessee LoCI Cooperation  Conclusions

RNP GTVD Context  Brazilian digital video working group main goals are:  Structure the Brazilian digital video community in a way that promotes cooperation  Set up a “Digital Video Network” over the RNP backbone  Computers, network resources, and software to provide a video distribution service  We have technical cooperation projects with:  Loci-University of Tennessee, Canal Saúde (Health Channel TV), Mast (National Astronomy Museum), Brazilian Educational TV Networks, UFRN, UFPE, UFBA, UNIFACS, PUC-Rio, USP-SP, UFSC.  We are sponsored by RNP (Rede Nacional de Ensino e Pesquisa – Brazilian National Research and Education Network)

RNP GTVD  Goal  Build a Video Overlay Network that supports the capture, recovery, and transmission of live and on demand video.  Requirements  Support multiple video formats  Player independence  Optimize backbone usage  Result  Implementation of a Video Distribution Service over RNP Video Overlay Network

GTVD VDS High Level Architecture

Web clients find videos by accessing applications with relevant metadata and URLs... Video Distribution Scheme Video Access Layer Storage Layer Web Client Online Catalog Application Coordination Plan GTVD VDS

The client activates the URL that is processed by the coordination layer, which redirects the client to the nearest video access server... Video Distribution Scheme Video Access Layer Storage Layer Coordination Plan Web Client Coordination Server GTVD VDS

The URL used in the redirection includes the video identifier and a route to the server with a persistent copy of the video... Video Distribution Scheme Video Access Layer Storage Layer Corrdination Plan Web Client Video Access Server Video Access Server Video Access Server GTVD VDS

The last video access server in the chain interacts with the IBP network to recover the stored video. The data stream then flows through the chain of access servers and is stored in each server´s cache while being played by the client... RNP GTVD and Tennessee University LoCI Cooperation  Integration of GTVD VDS and LoCI IBP network  Implementation of IBP Source and Target Components  Definition of ways to handle persistent copies of videos  Studying ways to control the moving of videos  Storage of real time events using the LoCI IBP servers and GTVD Live and VoD servers  Demo “Logistical Networking Rocks Your World”

Conclusion  We have implemented and tested a nation-wide video distribution service  Live and VoD Unix C++ Servers and Java Thin Servers  We are now publishing contents from Canal Saúde (Health Channel TV), Mast (National Astronomy Museum) and Brazilian Educational TV Networks.  We have achieved promising results with the integration of LoCI-IBP and GTVD VDS
