Searching the Deep Web By Mrs. McGraw

Protocol of McGraw Search Method Metasearch Engine (like Dogpile) Search Engine (like Google ) Directory Search Engine (Yahoo!) New Providence School Library Databases New Providence School Library Catalog

What are the most popular search engines in the US? 900,000, ,000, ,000, ,000,000 33,000,000 19,000,000 9,000,000

What is a Metasearch engine? A meta-search engine is a search tool that sends user requests to several other search engines and/or databases and then gathers together the results into a single list or displays them according to their source.

What are some good metasearch engines?  Dogpile Nice because it points to the search engines and also gives tabs for video and images  Excite Only looks at google, yahoo and bing but also gives tabs like dogpile. MetaCrawler Seems to favor Yahoo has tabs like dogpile Search.com Seems to favor bing  iBoogie Not Commercial relies on Blekko, seems pretty academic IxQuick No tabs, doesn’t list the search engines.

Be careful! We are not here to buy things from the web so steer clear of websites of a commercial nature. Some good bets for valid websites depend on sponsors and include those ending in: –.org –.gov –.edu Who owns the site? Is it a reputable group or organization? Is the information current? Does the source tell readers where its facts are from?

The McGraw Search Protocol Step 1 Metasearch Engine (good place to start since it gives a bird’s eye perspective using a number of search engines)

The McGraw Search Protocol Step 2 Search Engine (I always pick the search engine that gives the most relevant results from the Metasearch, for scholarly information)

The McGraw Search Protocol Step 3 (Optional) Directory EngineSearch (Once I get a better idea of what I am specifically looking for, I can do a directory search on a specific topic, usually I use Yahoo!, by the way, Yahoo! is especially great for business. Yahoo! finance—is an excellent source of company profiles and financial information)

The McGraw Search Protocol Step 4 (INCREASES DEPTH) School Library Databases (Such as access to EBSCO Host)

The McGraw Search Protocol Step 5 (SOMETIMES PRINT IS REQUIRED FOR SOME ASSIGNMENTS) School Library Catalogue (reveals books on the subject area)

Do a websearch, using the methods we talked about on this interesting topic: Quinceañera As you search keep in mind these questions: Who? When? Why? What ? Where? How?

Complete the Quinceañera quiz on Quia
