Healthcare in Britain-The National Health Service THE PROBLEMS Rising Healthcare costs: Inefficiency: Poor standards: THE SOLUTIONS IMPACT : Name:_______________ Class: _____ Date: _____

Healthcare in Britain THE PROBLEMS Rising Healthcare costs: Under the welfare system- healthcare was available free of charge to everyone Thus healthcare costs increase. The government collected more taxes to pay for healthcare expenses. Country becomes unattractive to businesses This becomes the biggest challenge Inefficiency Growing number of elderly Increasing demand for healthcare. Population had slowed down- number of people paying taxes declined. Not enough resources to cope with demand. Insufficient doctors, nurses and facilities Poor standards The NHS was not able to meet the needs of the people. Increase in demand led to poor standards. Long queues, insufficient beds, overworked doctors, etc. THE SOLUTIONS Managing Government Spending In the 1980s, the government tried to cut back government spending on healthcare. By making individuals more responsible. Increase the national Insurance contributions to finance the NHS. Increasing Efficiency Privatisation- contract out non-medical services. ( laundry, cleaning, catering) Hospitals concentrate on providing medical services Medicine, dental treatment and opticians’ services-no longer free. British citizens were encouraged to take responsibility over their own welfare and health. Free health care only for students under 19 years of age, expectant mothers and those with children under 1 year of age. Provide Quality Service Focus on providing quality service for patients. NHS Plan increased government spending till offered patients faster and more convenient services. - made use of facilities for private hospitals NHS Improvement Plan patients have right to choose from 4 different providers and NHS would pay for treatment. - every patient would have access to their own personal Healthspace on the internet. -NHS direct- service to provide medical advice over the phone for minor ailments. IMPACT As a result, The government was able to manage spending on healthcare the government had enough funds to meet the healthcare needs of the people. As a result, Efficiency improved. People are more motivated to work harder. Government could save money. As a result Doctors see fewer patients There was less strain on the resources of the NHS. Patients have more choices. Hospitals continue to improve their services.
