Managing Healthcare Encouraging Self-Reliance

What is Self-Reliance? Not relying on others Having enough resources / money Being able to pay for oneself Not being a burden to others

Why Self-Reliance? Lessen burden on government Lessen burden on taxpayers Promote responsibility More focus on the truly needy

Encouraging Self-Reliance Medisave (MOH Website) (MOH Website) There are 2 main means by which the government encourages self-reliance. These are:

Medisave Part of Central Provident Fund (CPF) contributions Money is channeled monthly to Medisave For an adult 35 & below, 20% of CPF goes to Medisave For more detailed information: (CPF Website)

Medisave Used to pay hospital bills Use of Medisave extended after feedback Chemotherapy High blood pressure medication Assisting in conception HIV anti-retroviral drugs

Medisave More information on use of Medisave (MOH website)

Medisave (Question) Which group of Singaporeans may not have Medisave? (There may be more than one) Why?

Medisave With Medisave, healthcare spending is reduced S’poreans can pay for their own bills Healthcare becomes a shared responsibility Govt. burden is reduced No need to raise taxes

Medishield Medisave unable to cover long-term treatment National healthcare insurance scheme Premiums paid with Medisave Claims made from Medishield cover large bills Medishield covers long-term hospitalisation and treatments like dialysis

Medishield Medishield has been expanded over the years Example: Eldershield For people above 40 years old (MOH Website)

Encouraging Self-Reliance In conclusion, Encouraging self-reliance allows people to pay for their own healthcare and lessen the burden on the government and taxpayers. This allows government to better manage healthcare by directing resources to areas where it is more needed and not have to pour more money than is necessary
