it! Some tips and tricks for using Google Ashley Knapp Just

How Google Works… Google is ever-changing Parts of it function like a regular search engine and parts are original and known only to those who work at Google. Most relevant pages to your search appear at the top because of “bots” that follow links around the web. – Calculated by a “Page ranking” algorithm that uses words occurring on the page, other “signals” Google uses, including pages most viewed by others searching this topic and now social media cues.

Standard Google Search Blended results – “Page ranking” and instant – Different types of media automatically present itself Some Facts 1. Case does not matter “new york times” is the same as “New York Times.” 2. Punctuation is usually ignored 3. Every word does matter and is included in the search

“Instant search and page rank according to most popular search terms or searches you make most frequently. Most visited by others searching this term. Blended results show images and web sites, videos, maps and graphs all at once.

Google automatically generates additional search terms so students can find more information about a topic. 3 Helpful Tips to Give Students on Standard Searches (Or Tips To Use Yourself!) 1)Use words that would most likely appear on the page you are looking for. Ex: instead of typing “ my head hurts “ type “headache” 2) Describe what you need in as few words as possible, all of these words are searched for and some can be unrelated when separate. 3) Choose descriptive words that pull your topic apart from possible related ones. Navigate students towards some of the other results too! Not working? Try Advanced Search!

Advanced Google Searching Access Google’s Advanced Search through the new “gear” in the corner or just search it. Use Advanced Search to: teach students how to more effectively search in standard Google. to search by specific file types, domains, or reading levels to subtract topics irrelevant to your specific search to search by specific phrases or by specific dates.

Teach students to narrow search Subtract words irrelevant to your search with a subtraction sign in front. Modify reading level based on age or ability Search a specific file type (pdf, ppt, etc.) or in a specific domain or site (.edu,.gov. youtube.com) More options to search by date and usage rights

Google Commands The Google search bar functions as a number of tools as well. – You can use the tool bar to calculate, convert, define, find weather, time, movie listings, sunrise times, sports scores, or to track packages. For all of the Advanced Search options there are Google shortcuts in the standard search bar you can use too. Link to reference guide of Google commands

Google Side Bar Narrow your search results by type if you know what you are looking for. Google automatically can find results based on your location! Find the most up to date results by modifying the time. Narrow by advanced search options

Advanced Google Image Search Google: Advanced Image Search Search images by: Size and ratio Specific sites or Domains By color By type of image You can also search Images for reuse, or with usage rights and control safe searches

Google Scholar Searching Scholar links to other articles that cited the source! Scholar has a similar Advanced Searching option
