NAMING ELEMENTS The chemical symbol and the name of the elements must be known before starting any discussion in chemistry. There is a correlation between the name and the chemical symbol.  The chemical symbol is usually the first or the first and second letter of the name. H stands for the hydrogen atom He is heliumLi is lithium   Or it could be the first and third letter Mg is magnesiumMn is manganese  Or it could be the letters for the “Old” (Latin, Greek, etc.) name Fe is iron (ferrum: latin) Cu is copper (cuprum)

NAMES OF ELEMENTS TO KNOW H = hydrogen atomSi = siliconAg = silver He = heliumP = phosphorusSn = tin Li = lithiumS = sulfur Zn = zinc Be = berylliumCl = chlorine Ar = Argon B = boronBa = barium Ni = nickel C = carbonK = potassium (kalium) Pb = lead N = nitrogen atomCa = calcium Xe = xenon O = oxygen atomCr = chromiumAu = gold F = fluorine atomFe = iron (ferrum) Ne = neonHg = mercury Na = sodium (natrium)Cu = copper (cuprum) Mg = magnesiumI = iodine atom Al = aluminumBr = bromine atom

NAMING ELEMENTS There are 7 homonuclear diatomic elements. There are 7 homonuclear diatomic elements. These elements do not exist “alone” readily under the conditions experienced on the surface of the Earth. These elements do not exist “alone” readily under the conditions experienced on the surface of the Earth. H - hydrogen atomH 2 - hydrogen N - nitrogen atomN 2 - nitrogen O - oxygen atom O 2 - oxygen F - fluorine atomF 2 - fluorine Cl - chlorine atomCl 2 - chlorine Br - bromine atomBr 2 - bromine I - iodine atomI 2 - iodine You must be extra careful (& specific) when naming these elements

NAMING ELEMENTS PRACTICE PROBLEMS Name the following elements or give the appropriate symbol: _____ S_____ calcium_____ Co _____ Ar_____ oxygen_____ C _____ P_____ aluminum_____ Zn _____ Cu_____ sodium_____ Br _____ B_____ iron_____ Hg _____ Mg_____ potassium_____ Au sulfur argon phosphorus copper boron magnesium Ca O2O2O2O2 Al Na Fe K cobalt carbon zinc Bromine atom mercury gold
