Proposal  The mega resort should be built on reclaimed land  Offshore from Mamam Beach  Resort is connected by a bridge to Mamam Beach

Maman Beach Expansion  Maman beach is very small now and is unsuitable to handle large crowds for the mega resort  Reclaimed land will also include beaches  Mamam beach will be expanded 4 times larger

Resort  Area of reclaimed land:  200m(width) 400m(length)  Total: metre square  Artificial beach facing Mamam beach

Beautifying Mamam Beach  Removal of poles in the sea  If there is a need, create sea walls in the place facing out to sea such that beach- goers are not affected

Reasons-Other Northern Beaches  Not enough space to expand beaches due to proximity to wetlands  Far away from major attractions like Chek Jawa

Chek Jawa

Reasons-Chek Jawa  Unsuitable  Although the view at Chek Jawa is pleasant,  Chek Jawa is home to a rich biodiversity and constructing a resort there will destroy ecosystem

Reasons-Chek Jawa  Tourist attraction due to its diversity  Need to protect Chek Jawa  A mega resort will result in deforestation  - Lost of habitat

Mamam Beach

Reasons- Mamam Beach  On Mamam Beach itself…  Not suitable  - Waves are destructive (23 waves/min)  - Beach will slowly erode away  -No longer term precaution to protect the resort

Reasons- Mamam Beach  Since the waves are strong

Reason- Mamam Beach  Families are unable to swim along the beach - danger to lives  Beach resort must have accessible/shallow waters  Beach Resorts must be FUN!

Why Reclaim Land?  Reclaiming land from sea  - Solve problems of inadequate space on Ubin  -Provide more land for activities  - Does not require deforestation of mainland Pulau Ubin  -Does not affect flora and fauna on Ubin

Coastal Management  The waves are destructive near Mamam Beach (>13 waves per minute)  The newly reclaimed land needs Coastal protection to prevent excessive soil erosion  The north coast of the reclaimed land bears the brunt of the sea waves

Solution (SeaWalls)  Build a sea wall on the northern coast of the reclaimed land  Able to withstand strong pounding waves  Low maintenance

Solution (Sea Wall)  Even though the sea wall is expensive, the cost of repairing the resort due to soil erosion will be much more than the cost of a sea wall.

Solution (Coral Reefs)  Encourage coral reefs as they are:  Most eco-friendly  Natural barriers which dissipate waves  Aid the sea wall in protecting the coast  DOUBLE PROTECTION!

Green Building Methods  Interior of resort to be constructed mainly of wood  Renewable ( Trees can grow back)  Visually pleasing (Natural look)  Save electricity  In the day, a wooden house is much cooler  Lesser electricity is used on air- conditioning

Green Building Methods  Recycle Asphalt  Reuse tar from old roads to build new roads in the resort  Reduces the problem of disposing used asphalt  New asphalt requires oil to be made  Recycling them will save oil  Save the Earth!

Green Building Methods  Use large amount of glass in the building  Natural Lighting  A lot of electricity is used up to light the facilities  Utilizing sunlight which is a natural resource  Reduces the reliance on electricity and fossil fuels

Solar Energy

Green renewable energy  Solar energy  Why solar energy?  Singapore receives strong sunlight all year round  Equatorial region

 Assemble solar panels on the roofs of the resort  Maximizes space  Provide renewable energy for the building  Maximizes the energy harness Harnessing solar energy

 If energy produce is not sufficient…  Solar panel farm offshore  Use of Concentrating Solar Power (CSP)  Generates electricity by using mirrors to focus the sun’s energy and convert it to high-temperature heat  This heat is then used to power a conventional generator

Green Living Practices  Reduce  Air conditioning  ( More fans to replace Air conditioners)  Roof of Resort Lobby is transparent  -Allow light to enter during the day  -Need not rely on lighting which uses electricity

Reduce  Encourage tourists to use less plastic bottles  Clean potable water are accessible from water coolers all around the resort  If the tourist insist on getting bottled drinks, he must buy them from specific stalls

Reuse  Water drained from the shower is reuse to flush toilet  Shower water is drained down special pipe  Treated and filtered  Reuse to flush toilets  (30% of household water usage)

Recycle  Put recycling bins all around the resort  (1 every 50 metres)  Every week, a boat will bring back the collected materials to be recycled to mainland
