Upgrade 2 - Unit 7 Grammar Reference Some, Any, No

I have some money. I have no money?

These words are used when the speaker doesn’t want to specify the exact number or the exact quantity of something. I saw some people in front of the theater. She’s not a very nice person. She doesn’t have any friends. Are you hungry? There is some bread on the kitchen table. Have you seen any good plays recently? SOME is used in affirmative sentences and ANY is used in negative and interrogative ones.

However, in offer and request questions, we use SOME. Would you like some coffee? Can I have some water? Do you want some tea? Can you give me some help?

We can also use ANY in affirmative sentences. When we do so, we mean “no limits”. My boss is a millionaire. He can buy any car he wants! Peter is very thin. He never gains weight. He can eat any food he wants!

NO is similar to ANY. However, it is used in affirmative sentences with a negative meaning. I have no money. Poor Susan, she has no friends! There is no wine left!
