Introduction Terra means "EARTH" & Cotta means "BAKED" A type of earthenware or porous pottery made from local clays glaze with glazes containing galena. Soft enough to be scratched by a knife.

History Produced by western and pre-colombian people after the 14th century Has been used throughout history for sculpture, pottery, bricks & roof shingles.

Manufacturing Includes 4 operations- Preparation of clay Moulding Drying Burning

Physical Properties of Terracotta when it is in wet form, it has bad odor. But when it is baked and original terracotta is formed, then it is odorless . It appears red & brown in color. has a rough texture, but can be finished when it is molded. it feels rough.

Proporties of Terra cotta fired clay usually low fired typically a reddish, unglazed ceramic materil may be hard fired glzed or unglazed ceramic material Durable Fireproof Strong and be molded in to any shape i.e. MEALLEABLE available in variety of designs colour and finishes

Composition of terracotta Dry clay 50-60% ground glass 8-10% crushed pottery 20% clean white sand 10-20%

MATERIALS DRY CLAY GROUND GLASS CRUSHED POTTERY CLEAN DRY SAND

Varieties of terracotta 1.POROUS TERRACOTTA 2.POLISHED TERRACOTTA

porous terra cotta fire proof. sound proof. can be chiseled and nailed easily. light in weight. resistant to weathering action. structurally weak.

polished terra cotta known as fine terra cotta hard, strong & durable leak proof(water absorption < 12%) & can be easily cleaned available in variety of colors indicate superior quality of terra cotta used for ornamental purposes and in industrial area ordinarily unaffected by the adverse atmospheric conditions.

ADVANTAGES OF TERRACOTTA strong and durable available in different colors cheaper than ordinary finely dressed stone can be easily cleaned fire proof thus used with RCC work light in weight terracotta products are easy to install eco-friendly material, recyclable. not affected by atmospheric agencies, acids and weathering actions as compared to any other stone

disadvantages oF terracotta cannot fixed during progress of work but it can be fixed during completion shape may get change due to unequal drying

Market Availability terracotta tiles( square, buttons) Not directly available in market, but Found in different forms... terracotta tiles( square, buttons) decorative roofs Flooring vitrified tiles parking tiles terracotta bricks Murals Bonsai Flower pots Potteries Cookware Handicrafts sculptures

Sculpture

Usage in Building Industries hollow blocks of terracotta are used for masonries cornices and arches Statuettes ornamental works being fire-proof, it is most suitable as casing for steel columns & beams it is also used for sound insulation.

COST OF TERRACOTTA Generally the cost of terracotta is about 100 to 120 rs per kg. Terracotta bricks costs 25 to 30 Rs. per brick.
