Hypothesis To change the Harbor of Izmir to create a marina / shopping mall for people of Izmır and tourists coming with ships. The marina will bring a new dynamism to the local economy of Izmir by the shops and cafes. The main purpose is to change the perception to the mus unpleasent place in Izmir and turn it into the most visitable and welcoming place of Izmir for both tourists and locals.

Problems Caused by Alsancak Harbor Izmir Harbor location is in the very prestige and important area of Izmir. It is located in the center of the Izmir Gulf. Its view sees the Karşıyaka and the gulf. It is located in a huge area. Because of those characteristics of the place, people should use there. There must be a project to solve socializing and shopping. Environments are very effective for people psychologies. Today, people cannot use that lovely place because of its commercial seen and huge equipments.

Problems Caused by Alsancak Harbor

Socio Physical Environment - Human Behaviors Environments are very effective for people psychologies. Today, people cannot use that lovely place because of its commercial seen and huge equipments. Stokols and Altman mentioned that (1987) the study of human behavior, well-being and experience in relation to the socio physical environment. In that case, the atmosphere and the usage type of places are the most important issues in human socializing. When the harbor turned into being a shopping center, we will have restaurants, cafes, walking paths etc.

All those elements will make that place socio physical environment. People behaviors will change in the space because of its using aims and atmosphere. People do not want to go that place in these days because they cannot enter that place. There are many industrial machines and many vehicles in harbor. Nobody wants to go there. Also the gulf loses its beauty and specialties day by day. Socio Physical Environment - Human Behaviors

To solve all those problems, harbor have to put into the center of the city again. The machines and atmosphere should change in to a central park and shopping areas for people. Population of Izmir is very much. Those people might have such a shopping and socializing place for their human relations. Socio Physical Environment - Human Behaviors

Design Proposal and Relation to Environmental Psychology After studying environmental psychology, Lynch also have points about this subject. According to Lynch there are five important elements of legibility in mental maps of cities. We make connection with our hypothesis and these five elements “ path, edge, node, district, landmark”. Our “Izmir Marina”’ s location will be on the main streets. Because means of access is very important in transporting. Paths will be large roads and easy to find, access city centers etc. node is the other important element of legibility. Node is center of important pathways.

Design Proposal and Relation to Environmental Psychology Node and path are about accessing and these two elements make fast-access easier. Because in transporting time line is important. Also without transporting charges, “Izmir Marina” is a shopping center. There will be a lots of visitors and customers. Their accessing must be also easy and for people who do not have personal vehicle, will visit here by public transformation. So roads must be well-thought and designed. “Izmir Marina” will be an edge between Aliaga and Izmir.

Design Proposal and Relation to Environmental Psychology It will be both a part of city and an escape from the city. Marina will make also gain money by transporting and by shopping centers, fun areas. There will be an invisible line between two places. This large space, area will be an identity both Izmir and Aliaga. This Marina will be very important in Turkey’s economy and social life and this situation will make here as a landmark.
