ALICE Project 18 Latin American Countries and 4 European NRENs Creation of CLARA, the organization of LA NREN’s –18 (100%) LA Countries –Legally established in Uruguay –Management structure in place Establishment of RedCLARA –The Network –The Operations are carried out by CUDI in Mexico –The Engineering is subcontracted to RNP in Brazil –The Information Systems is subcontracted to REUNA in Chile

The WHREN/LILA Project WHREN: Western Hemisphere Research and Education Network LILA Links Interconnecting Latin America IRNC Project funded by NSF and leaded by FIU and CENIC in the US. CLARA, CUDI, RNP, ANSP from Latin America Acquired IRU of Dark fiber Tijuana-San Diego. Running GbE on top of it. (to Pacific Wave) 2.4 Gbps Sao Paulo-Miami shared with CHEPREO & ANSP (to Atlantic Wave)

The Scenario during 2008 The RedCLARA Network currently connects 12 countries The ALICE Project initially due to end on March 2006 was extended and ended on March 31, 2008 A new funding, ALICE2 is expected to be approved during 2008 CLARA has taken over the contracts for regional networks The link to Europe is co-funded by GEANT and CLARA

RedCLARA’s Vision for 2009 Future backbone should be composed at least of CLARA owned dark fiber in the following links –AR-CL; AR-BR; BR-UY The Intercontinental link to Europe should reach 2.5 Gbps during 2010 growing to 1.2 Gbps in 2008 The PA-MX and PA-CL should be at least STM-4 as well as the BR-MX The Node in Miami should be connected to PA at 1.2 Gbps Central America should be connected at STM-1 speeds while the Puebla-Panamá Plan begins operation

New Connections CLARA is committed to connect all Latin American Countries ALICE2 will include all LA countries willing to participate Expressions of interest have already been received from Bolivia, Costa Rica and Paraguay Main issues are: –Funding of the Local NREN –Costs of Telecomunications
