S ETTING oLoLina and Vanessa live in Corpus Christi, Texas, in a small neighborhood. The story usually takes place at Vanessa's house or at her school. The time period is around 2008/ 2009.

C HARACTERS Lina is a 12 year old girl with long dark brown hair. Not only is her hair long, her legs are too. She is tall and skinny, and is often labeled “daddy long legs”. Lina is a smart girl, and a sensitive one. She is the kind of girl who needs comfort when she's lonely. Vanessa is Linas’ best friend. They are the same age and she looks fairly different from Lina, despite the brown hair and eyes. Vanessa is described as “the pretty one”, by the narrator (Lina). Vanessa has an up-beat personality, and is crazy about boys. She has lots of friends, but chooses Lina to be her “BFF”.

P LOT : C ONFLICT Lina is confused throughout most of the book. Her mom passed away last summer, and her dad is a crazy bibliophile (someone who is obsessed with books), so he is spending more time picking out books than a good recipe to eat for dinner. While focusing on trying to help her best friends man-hating mom, she is having trouble keeping up with her grades. On top of all of that, it seems to Lina that Vanessa would rather be with her boyfriend, Carlos, than with her.

P LOT : R ESOLUTION When Lina feels no one cares for her, she comes out to people, and tell them what's wrong. They admit their mistakes by cracking cascarones (hollow eggshells filled with confetti) on their own heads and it turns into a colorful confetti apology. They forgive each other and begin a fun, berserk cascarone fight.

Y OUR O PINION I love this book! Confetti Girl is definitely one of my favorite books. I have a couple things in common with Lina, and the whole story is entertaining.

A BOUT THE A UTHOR As a child she loved listening to stories. She failed kindergarten since she only knew how to speak Spanish. Lopez won first place in the Shakespeare drama festival three years in a row. She knows how to make homemade cascarones (hollow eggshells filled with confetti) Diana's last name (Lopez) means: “son of lope”.

5 T EST Q UESTIONS What was Linas real name? Linas favorite subject is_____. What character had a speech problem? What was Linas dad obsessed with? What was Lina obsessed with?

S UMMARY Lina lives in Corpus Christi, Texas. Her and her book-obsessed dad live across the street from Vanessa and her man-hating mother. Vanessa, Linas’ best friend, is too interested in her boyfriend, Carlos, her dad is too interested in reading, and Lina wants to know why her mom died last year. Lina has many questions, and she finally figures them out with the help of colorful confetti.
