Language Arts Students are expected to come in being able to read at a “C” level. I begin reading groups the second week of school, which consists of rotations (seatwork, centers, teacher) two of which are independent. Group students by reading level to meet their needs. 5

Word Club Words There are 226 First Grade “Sight Words” A student should come in knowing the first 30 words (Kindergarten sight words) Students will get a prize for learning these word club words. They get a prize for the first 30 words and then it increases to every 50 words after that. 6

Word Club Words Students must meet a goal each trimester in order to be proficient in their sight words. Goals for each trimester: Trimester 1 ~ 80 words Trimester 2 ~ 160 words Trimester 3 ~ 226 (all) words /sight/index.html 7

Accelerated Reader (AR) What is AR? Accelerated Reader (AR) is a reading program to enrich our language arts curriculum while fostering a love of reading. Students read books at their reading/interest level and take an online quiz to reinforce reading comprehension. Each book and quiz has a given point value that students accrue throughout the school year. Basically… 8

Accelerated Reader (AR) 1.Students read an AR book at their reading level (not all books have an AR quiz) They log into AR and take a reading comprehension quiz (independently). 3. The students accumulate points only if they score % on their quiz. 4. After a student accumulates 5 points (10 100% each) they receive a prize at flag salute or library. 9
