Chapter 1 Lesson 2 Exploring New York

Topic: Exploring New York Date: 9//13 Source: TB p. 18-24 Niagara Falls: the land around Niagara Falls became the first NY state park

Finger Lakes: 11 lakes shaped like fingers and formed by glaciers

Gorge: valley with very steep, rocky sides

Adirondack Mountains: 42 mountains more than 4,000 feet high

Hudson River: begins as a stream in the Adirondack Mountains and flows south 315 miles to the Atlantic Ocean

Tributary: stream or river that flows into a larger river

Estuary: an arm of the sea

Long Island: is very long (120 miles long) Montauk Point: eastern tip of Long Island

Lake Erie Lake Ontario Two of the world’s biggest lakes that border NY Part of a group of 5 lakes called “the Great Lakes”
