3 rd Nine Weeks Benchmark Review

Question 1 Jimmy hits a baseball on 25 out of 75 tries during practice. What is the experimental probability that he will hit the ball on his next try? Write your answer as a fraction, decimal, AND a percent.

Answer to Question 1

Question 2 For lunch, Claire can choose from hot dogs, hamburgers, or pizza. She can drink milk, orange juice, Gatorade, or coke. For a side order, she can have fruit, chips, or fries. How many possible choices does she have?

Answer to Question 2 To solve: 3 x 4 x 3 Answer is: 36 possible choices

Question 3 A game includes a number cube and a spinner divided into five equal sections. Each player rolls the number cube, and spins the spinner. How many outcomes are possible?

Answer to Question 3 To solve: 6 x 5 Answer is ‘30 outcomes.’

Question 4 A set of cards includes 14 yellow cards, 12 green cards, and 24 blue cards. What is the probability of getting a yellow card, then another yellow card, without replacing the first card?

Answer to Question 4

Question 21 Louis missed 8 of the 40 questions on his test. What percent of the questions did he get wrong?

Answer to Question 21

Question 22 Lisa missed 12 of the 40 questions on her quiz. What percent of the questions did she get correct?

Answer to Question 22

Question 23 A diver is at 67 feet below sea level. The diver sees a shark 57 feet below her. Write an integer to best describe the depth of the shark.

Answer to Question 23 Start at – 67 ft. The shark is 57 below that, so think, go down 57. When I go down, I subtract, – 67 – 57, or – 67 + (– 57). This gives me – 124 ft. or 124 ft. below sea level.

Question 24 The temperature in Seattle, WA was 19ºF. A cold front moved in and dropped the temperature by 24 degrees. What was the temperature in Seattle after the cold front moved in?

Answer to Question 24 To solve: 19 – 24 = – 5 Answer is: – 5ºF

Question 25 The temperature in Kansas City, KS was – 2ºF. The temperature in Orlando, FL was 77ºF. What was the difference between these temperatures?

Answer to Question 25 When taking the difference between two temperatures, start with the higher temperature first, the subtract the low. So, 77 – ( – 2), becomes = 79. Answer is: 79º

Question 26 Suzy walked around a square garden that had a perimeter of 56 yards. What is the area of the garden?

Answer to Question 26 If the perimeter is 56 yards, then divide by 4 to get one of the sides. s = 14 yd. Use the area formula: A = s 2 Then, 14 x 14 = 196 sq. yd. The area is 196 yd 2.

Question 27 Simon walked around a square garden that had an area of 225 sq. yards. He wants to put fencing around the garden. How many feet of fencing would he need to surround the entire garden? (1 yard = 3 feet)

Answer to Question 27 Remember, fencing means putting a ‘perimeter’ around the garden. So, if area is 225, take the square root to find a s. s = 15 yd. A side is 15 yd, but the perimeter is 4s, so then 15 x 4 = 60 yds. BUT, it asks for how many ‘feet’ is needed, so 1 yard = 3 feet, then multiply 60 x 3, and get 180 feet. Answer is: 180 feet
