Agamemnon Leader of the Greeks in the Trojan War

Background He was the King of Mycanae His brother and himself untied the Greek states against the Trojans He was the leader of the Greeks in the Trojan war He was considered to be brave, but proud He was married to Clytemnestra

Story Explanation #1 After having united all of the Greek states in an effort to wage war with the Trojans, Agamemnon was going to set out for sea, but unfortunately was hindered by the Goddess Artemis. Agamemnon had killed one of her sacred animals, thus Artemis died down the winds and put a plague over Agamemnon’s troops. To bring satisfaction to Artemis, Agamemnon had to sacrifice his daughter, Iphigeneia. Agamemnon did so. He lured his daughter to where he was and sacrificed her.

Story Explanation #2 While out at war, Agamemnon’s wife, Clytemnestra, learned of Agamemnon’s sacrifice and was angry with him. She also fell in love with another man while he was away (Aegisthus). When Agamemnon returned home, his wife stabbed him while he was bathing, killing him.

Allusion Agamemnon is alluded to in the Iliad (by Homer). Aagamemnon is one of the main characters in this tale and plays a role that is true to his mythological role, commander of the Greek states and King. In this tale he is too often stubborn and arrogant, leading to his making poor decisions. In the story, he does win the war against Troy. This story is very true to the true personality and accomplishments of Agamemnon, including that he took Troy and that he was arrogant. However, Agamemnon was never guided by Odysseus or Old Nester, two central characters in the Iliad. Agamemnon inherited his throne (from his father) in the Iliad, but in Greek mythology had to kill his uncle for the throne.
