SELF-DRIVING CARS THEIR RAPID AND INEVITABLE APPROACH MACKENZIE GIBBS ITMG 100 SECTION 05

THE TECHNOLOGY Lasers, sensors, artificial intelligence, and cameras combined allow cars to be their own driver

Google uses sensors within the car, a laser atop the car (Lider) and artificial intelligence to create a fully autonomous vehicle. GOOGLE LEADING THE WAY

Although not fully autonomous, the Temporary Autopilot System serves as co-pilot and takes stress off the driver through sensing for obstacles and barriers. VOLKSWAGON

At first, the driver controls the car with two joysticks, as they lose interest, the joysticks stow themselves and the seat reclines to give a living room feel. HONDA

“Platooning” One professional driver leads a caravan of cars wirelessly where each individual can relax and enjoy the ride, but leave the string of cars and regain control at any time. VOLVO

The Track Trainer can mimic a previous drive and recreate without the help of a driver to “the last inch of asphalt” (Neil, 2012). BMW

THE BENEFITS “You have predictable, courteous, law-abiding, absolutely consistent driver in that vehicle. It’s a robot, it’s a machine.”– Art MacCarley THE IMPACT Lessen traffic congestion Prevent accidents Lower cost of automobile accidents (currently $300 billion annually) Lower cost of traffic congestion (currently $100 billion annually) Never fall asleep or react irrationally in a dire situation React quickly and correctly to in an emergency Allow people to travel with disabilities such as blindness

CONCERNS  What if the system crashes while a passenger is not paying attention?  What kind of information is the car taking in? Is this a violation of privacy?  Can I rely on the system not crashing? “There is always the possibility of fault.”– Art MacCarley

“SO DON’T BE AFRAID OF AUTONOMY. EMBRACE IT. USE IT. GOING FORWARD, WE’RE GOING TO NEED EVERYONE’S BEST IDEAS.”– DAN NEIL
