THE DREAM TEAM 2012 : USA MEN’S BASKEBALL TEAM

OLYMPIC BASKETBALL BY: Lincoln Howard Language Arts 3 rd period

NUMBER OF COMPETITORS In the 2012 Summer Games there were 144 men and 144 women that competed in the sport of basketball.

Number of Medal Events In the 2012 Summer Olympics there were two medal events. They were one men’s competition and one women’s competition.

COMPETITION DATES In the Summer Olympics there were several dates for the basketball games. The basketball games were Saturday, July 28, 2012 through Sunday August 12, 2012.

THE BASICS OF BASKETBALL The basics of basketball include the following: You must first shoot the basketball with your hands to get it into the net. If you succeed then your team gets a point. The way you get from one end of the court to the other is to dribble the basketball. Dribbling is when you bounce the ball from your to the floor. Dribbling the ball over and over down the court until you get to your team’s net to shoot and score a point.

GAME TIME Games usually last around 40 minutes split into 10 minute quarters. There 4 quarters in a game. The clock stops every 10 minutes for players to take a break. Time-outs last 1 minute.

HOW POINTS ARE AWARDED Points are awarded by free throws, two-pointers and three-pointers. Free throws are awarded when the opposing team players fouls one of the other teams players. Two –pointers are when one of the team members makes a regular shot. Three-pointers are when a person is far way from the net/basket. Three points are awarded if he makes the shot.

HISTORY OF BASKETBALL Men's basketball first appeared on the Olympic program at the Berlin 1963 games. Professional players first competed in Barcelona in the 1992 games when the famous U.S. Dream Team won gold in the men’s event.

U.S.A ATHELETES One of the athletes from the men’s U.S. basketball team was Kobe Bryant. One of the athletes from the U.S. women’s basketball team was Tina Charles.

FACTS One fact from the Olympics basketball is that the U.S. team (Dream Team) brought home the gold. Another fact is that U.S. was in first second was Spain then Argentina was third. The men’s basketball teams used 600 basketball during the summer games in 2012.
