Word Problem… Lego’s Jody, Amy, and Tim are building a model out of Lego’s. The top level is a 1 by 2 rectangle. The level directly underneath is a 2 by 3 rectangle. The level underneath is a 3 by 4 rectangle. How many Lego’s will they need if their building is to be 12 levels high? Make a chart to show your work.

Self help… Take good notes Look over review sheets Study your notes Pay attention in class If you follow these tips, you will improve your grades and be better prepared for the following year’s math course. To take good notes, I would suggest sitting directly in front of the board, so you will pay better attention. Also don’t sit by any of your friends so you won’t get distracted. If you have a question, ask the teacher for help. If you look over the review sheets that the teacher usually hands out the day before the test, then you will be better prepared for the test the following day. If you don’t have the correct answers when you are going over them, use another sheet of paper and write down the correct answers instead of scratching out the incorrect ones so this way you won’t get confused, and your paper will be neat. I’ve found that if you study your notes the night before the test and in your spare time in school, then you will have everything fresh in your head and will be ready to take the test. This helps a lot if you take good notes, and aren’t sloppy about taking them. Paying attention in class will help you bring your grades up and better prepare you for quizzes and tests. To pay attention in class, once again I suggest sitting in front of the class, in front of the board. Don’t sit by any of your friends, this will help you to not have the urge to talk out and distract your fellow classmates.

Math in Sports… Did you know that all sports deal with math? Take basketball for example. Basketball is played on a rectangular court with two teams of 5 playing at all times. “Free throws” or foul shots are worth 1 point, as other shots in front of the three point line are worth 2 points, and shot made at the top of the key or around are worth 3 points. When players shoot “free throws” or foul shots, they shoot 15 feet away from the basket. Lengths of quarters vary from 15 minutes to 10 minutes as in high school basketball. When you keep score, you use math. You use math to add up the score and the amount of points a shot is worth. You also use math to keep track of time a player sits on the bench and plays. According to the NBA a basketball rim is 56.5 inches in circumference and a standard NBA regulation basketball is 30.7 inches in circumference. Basketballs for ages 15-pro, are supposed to weigh a regulation 22 ounces. A basketball hoop is regulation 10 feet high from the court. As you can see math is used many different ways in basketball. Whether you are keeping score, or playing, or referring, you need simple math to play the sport. Basketball is a very fun sport, you should give it a shot sometime!

Answers… They both weigh the same. 728 Lego’s
