Tips From The Road Melissa Zolla, Senior Leadership Consultant Liz D’Orsa, Fraternity Development Coordinator & Past Leadership Consultant

Goal of Session ● Prepare you for upcoming visits ● Maximize your time with your Consultant ● Improve the overall experience of having a Leadership Consultant

Before Your Visit ● Receive an from the LC Coordinator ● Be in contact with your Consultant ● Create her schedule

Resources! ● Theta Phi Alpha website o Leadership Consultant tab on yellow toolbar o Brief profiles of each consultant o LC Preparation Guides

Resources! ● LC Planning guide o Gives you step-by-step instructions on what to expect for your visit o We will cover the majority of the information in here

You just picked up your LC... ● Welcome us! We are really excited for the visit! ● Provide us with our schedule, information on where we are staying, and other documents we need. o A chapter roster, chapter bylaws, Standards Board and Academic Excellence programs, and a campus map.

Scheduling ● Free time is appreciated! ○ It’s okay to leave us by ourselves ● Travel days, if possible, no meetings or presentations ● Be mindful of everything that is on the schedule ○ Look at it and say “Would I be tired at the end of the day?”

Scheduling ● We’ve made these same mistakes when we were in the chapter ● Do not be offended if we ask to change around the schedule

Activities ● What makes your town/school unique? ● Sporting events are a good time ● Sisterhood events where we get to interact with others who we haven’t met yet o Think recruitment bumping

Activities ● Try not to overload us with activities every night o Benefits us as well as the chapter ● Movie nights are always good ● Please don’t be insulted if we don’t attend every activity on the schedule.

Meals ● Hard on the road to get a good meal ● Do NOT have to eat out for every meal ● We all have inside jokes but try to refrain because we will have no idea what’s going on

Meals ● Include us in your conversations ● This is the time we get to spend w/ the majority of the chapter in a laid back setting ● Try and have different sisters at each meal so we can get to know the entire chapter

Lodging ● Your chapter does not need to spend money on a hotel but please make sure we have a private room. ● Please provide: ○ Towels, clean pillows, sheets, and blankets. ○ Clean desk ○ Laundry facilities and detergent ○ Bottled water and snacks

Meetings ● minute breaks between meetings is very appreciated ● When meeting with anyone that has a program it should be sent to us before we get there ○ Standards Board, New Member Education, Academic Excellence ● Some meetings might run long, others might be short; prepare to be flexible ○ Generally 1 hour for executive board and ½ hour for chairpersons

Meetings ● Do NOT have to meet with every chairperson unless we discuss it beforehand ○ Reason why the visits are more focused ● Space should be private, not a lounge or coffee shop ● Try not to do meetings over meals; unable to take notes and eat!

Meetings ● Come prepared to meetings ● Notebook/pen/binder/laptop ● Don’t care if you actually use it, show us you’re making the effort.

Let’s see what you’ve learned... ● Work with two or three people around you to create a schedule for your Leadership Consultant ● One day’s worth of meetings and activities o Meetings with the Treasurer, Fundraising chair, Sisterhood chair and Vice President

Example... Day 2, Wednesday September 5, :00 AM: Breakfast with sisters in Dining Hall, escorted by Erin C. (555) There are snacks and juice in your room if you want to skip breakfast. Please let Erin know. 10:30-11:30 AM : Meeting with Tracey Treasurer in Meeting Room on Campus UC234 12:00 PM: Lunch with sisters at Sub Shop and quick campus tour. Presentations ● Specialized workshops to fit your chapter’s needs ● We put time and effort to come with the best one for your chapter, give us the courtesy of being involved ● We will call you 2 weeks before to discuss the area you might need most help with

Presentations ● Be honest with us! ● Not trying to get you in trouble, trying to help you out as much as possible ● If things have changed since the request was made, let us know ● What will benefit your chapter the most
