Maven Someone with special knowledge about a particular subject. Mrs. Herring is a maven on the subject of how to teach children to read.

Reigned Someone who is very important in a particular place. Principal Herring has reigned over Chelsea Intermediate school for many years.

Smirk An unkind smile The child had a smirk on his face as he told his mom he would be happy to clean his room.

Conceited A person who thinks too highly of themselves. Billy Bob’s announcement that he was the best looking boy in school shows how conceited he is.

Mortified Feeling extremely embarrassed or ashamed. Mrs. Brooks was mortified during her presentation when she dropped her notes and forgot what to say.

Designated A place chose for a special purpose. The library was the designated place for the parent meeting about going on the field trip to Washington, D.C.

exhilarated Feeling very excited and energetic. The school staff felt exhilarated to learn they had some of the highest reading scores in the county!
