Jonah Once More Peter Fitch, St. Croix Vineyard Sunday, April 19, 2015

2 Kings 14:25 He restored the border of Israel from the entrance of Hamath as far as the Sea of the Arabah, according to the word of the Lord, the God of Israel, which He spoke through His servant Jonah the son of Amittai, the prophet, who was of Gath-hepher.

A Storied Culture Doesn’t mean it isn’t true Perhaps even historical But that’s not the only option

In this case... Such a history!

Big Fish (Hebrew: Dag Gadol) Worshiped by the Assyrians Also the Philistines: the god Dagon Assyrian myth around Semiramis, legendary builder queen, has her as off-spring of fish and human, exposed to die, but nurtured by doves

Jonah means Dove Semiramis husband was Onnes, a general, but a king desired her and her husband hanged himself rather than give her up There is also an Assyrian legend of a man with almost exactly his name coming out of the sea Nineveh, across the Tigris from modern Mosul in Iraq, is being destroyed by ISIS (but many sculptures and reliefs in British museum)

Two tells at Ancient Nineveh One is called Prophet Jonah Hard to dig there because of a mosque dedicated to Jonah (only one of the minor prophets to be included in Koran)

Fish and Dove?

Possibilities Allegory of war Remembrance of myth Historical occurrence (if this one, God chose the most amazing way to communicate with these guys!)

Jonah 2

4 “So I said, ‘I have been expelled from Your sight. Nevertheless I will look again toward Your holy temple.’ 5 “Water encompassed me to the point of death. The great deep engulfed me, Weeds were wrapped around my head.6 “I descended to the roots of the mountains. The earth with its bars was around me forever, But You have brought up my life from the pit, O Lord my God.

Jonah 2 7 “While I was fainting away, I remembered the Lord, And my prayer came to You, Into Your holy temple. 8 “Those who regard vain idols Forsake their faithfulness, 9 But I will sacrifice to You With the voice of thanksgiving. That which I have vowed I will pay. Salvation is from the Lord.”

What is a vain idol for Jonah? It’s not a sinful practice so much as it is a refusal to lift his head to believe that God loves and cares for people who are not like him Even the Assyrians! The worst of the worst...

Jonah 4 1 But it greatly displeased Jonah and he became angry. 2 He prayed to the Lord and said, “Please Lord, was not this what I said while I was still in my own country? Therefore in order to forestall this I fled to Tarshish, for I knew that You are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abundant in lovingkindness, and one who relents concerning calamity. 3 Therefore now, O Lord, please take my life from me, for death is better to me than life.” 4 The Lord said, “Do you have good reason to be angry?”

Jonah 4 5 Then Jonah went out from the city and sat east of it. There he made a shelter for himself and sat under it in the shade until he could see what would happen in the city. 6 So the Lord God appointed a plant and it grew up over Jonah to be a shade over his head to deliver him from his discomfort. And Jonah was extremely happy about the plant. 7 But God appointed a worm when dawn came the next day and it attacked the plant and it withered.

Jonah 4 8 When the sun came up God appointed a scorching east wind, and the sun beat down on Jonah’s head so that he became faint and begged with all his soul to die, saying, “Death is better to me than life.” 9 Then God said to Jonah, “Do you have good reason to be angry about the plant?” And he said, “I have good reason to be angry, even to death.” 10 Then the Lord said, “You had compassion on the plant for which you did not work and which you did not cause to grow, which came up overnight and perished overnight.

Jonah 4 11 Should I not have compassion on Nineveh, the great city in which there are more than 120,000 persons who do not know the difference between their right and left hand, as well as many animals?”

What do we learn? The value of repentance (Yom Kippur reading) The value of being swallowed by something in terms of ultimate growth The value of people who don’t believe or think the same as we do: our smallness must stop!
