Open House September 24, 2015

Welcome! Mr. T. Dickson American History I am a graduate of the University of Puget Sound, This marks my 39 th year on the job, all at Miller.

Purpose of Open House Introduce myself. Explain the class cirriculum. You get to see the school and class settings.

District Scope and Sequence The District teaches Social Studies in every grade K- 12. For United State’s History in 8 th Grade, we cover the era of colonial America through reconstruction.

Textbook Should be at home!Classroom set.

My Webpage Can access monthly calendars, some assignments, resources.

iPad iPads are used for research, downloading the textbook, marking the text, as a text reader, and creating projects.

A.V.I.D. Advancement Via Individual Determination We are in the process of becoming an A.V.I.D. school. I do use several strategies.

W.I.C.O.R. Strategies I try to employ as many W.I.C.O.R. strategies in my lessons as possible.

Note Taking One of the A.V.I.D. strategies and I have forever done this, is to go “beyond the textbook”. Note taking is then a critical skill. Someone wise would say “the ways be many”: outlining, graphic organizers, power notes, two column notes, and Cornell Notes.

Projects Each quarter some form of a project is assigned. During the second quarter we do our State mandated CBA (classroom based assessment)

Progress Reports Progress reports are usually sent home after each test.

Online Monitoring I try to enter scores into the computer as soon as I can so parents and students can monitor progress on Skyward.
