Purpose of Presentation 1.Describe need for Liberty 2.Mission 3.Institutional Goals 4.The Plan 5.Demo

5 years ago we were asking……

Since that then it seems like everyone is moving to screens

Ebook and Tablet penetration continues to rise

Which leads to increase demand for ebooks

Ereading is on the rise

Continual increases in ebook sales are being projected

There is demand for ebooks from libraries

Library users still count on libraries to give them advice on ebooks

But, Many libraries can’t provide ebooks

Even when we have ebooks we are restricted by licensing

Resulting in miniscule library ebook market share

We need to expand ebook reach to libraries

We need to get libraries on the ebook map!

So we have formed a free library based ebook provider!

Liberty Mission Providing accessible ebook content for library patrons by removing technical, licensing and financial barriers.

Liberty Institutional Goals 1. One-click downloads of freely available electronic materials in the public domain 2. Use resources that are already existing as much as possible: MARC, OPAC’s 3. Use open source software as much as possible. 4. DRM materials will be managed by third party software (Phase 2) 5. System will be low cost for members, but self supporting by members contributing time and effort.

Liberty Plans Phase 1 Free E-books for cooperative members Phase 2 Installation of DRM and begin purchasing of materials that require DRM

Liberty is 71 Libraries in Northwest PA

How Liberty will work Phase 1

How Liberty will work Phase 2

How does it work in layman’s terms? Patrons connect to Liberty Integrated Library System through the local library web page Patrons search for an ebook Patrons select ebook and download it to their device

Since we are using MARC all files of Liberty will be freely available for download. Your patrons will be able to search through your catalog and then have the items downloaded through the Liberty servers. What if I want to use my own Integrated Library System for searching?

Current timeline First 500 ebooks will go online soon Additional ebooks will be added each month Funding for Phase 2 is currently being pursued
