Kitchen Safety to LIVE by! Rules

Clothing Wear an apron to protect your clothing

Avoid wearing bulky or long flowing clothes

Hygiene Pull long hair back Wash your hands before you begin

Rules Use thick, dry potholders to handle hot objects

Wear gloves if you have an open sore Use wooden spoons to stir hot foods

Pass knives with the handle pointed out and wash them separately

When cooking on a range-top, turn pan handles to the back or side to prevent accidents

Lift pan lids away from you (steam burns) Never leave food cooking unattended

Never use electricity around water (dry your hands before touching appliances)

Keep knives sharp and use a cutting board

Be sure you know how to use an appliance

Do not overload plugs Stand on a sturdy stool when reaching items up high

Keep your area neat and clean Wipe up spills

Never put a knife down into an appliance

Use a damp paper towel to pick up broken glass Keep cabinet doors closed

Practice proper kitchen techniques

Avoid cross contamination of food

Use caution when cooking with alcohol

Stay Focused

Be Prepared Keep a fire extinguisher handy

Know how to perform the Heimlich Maneuver
