Unit 4

Fast Facts/History Located in the Central Atlantic Named after the Spanish sea captain who discovered the Bermudas – Juan de Bermudez. The only portion of the Caribbean that has a subtropical climate – meaning it gets a little “cooler” in the winter (average temperature is still ~20  C) Very susceptible to Hurricanes

The islands are surrounded by coral reef, which has caused many shipwrecks throughout its history. It is around these types of events that superstition warnings swirl The Bermuda Triangle – a region where a number of aircrafts and ships have mysteriously gone missing. The island is like a pothole in the middle of a freeway – the Gulf Stream draws ships into her path, towards Bermuda’s shallow reef; coupled with the occasional hurricane is a recipe for disaster.

Many of today’s Bermudans are descended from shipwreck survivors.

Things to Do/Attractions Visit the pink-sand beaches Spot whales beyond the reefs of South Shore during March & April. Dive the world’s greatest concentration of shipwrecks: The decks of some boats lie just 10ft below the surface. Bermuda has so many wrecks they are literally piled on top of one another. The sheer number of sites and strict marine preservation means that many wrecks remain remarkably intact.
