NARTI Doctoral Colloquium Keele University, June 2014 Publishing Qualitative Research: A view as editor of Marketing Theory Prof Liz Parsons University of Liverpool

NARTI Doctoral Colloquium Keele University, June 2014 Preparing your paper –Clarity and structure - tell one story (difficult when you’re writing a whole thesis!) –Define your contribution Context and literature gaps. What are your theoretical concepts? How do these concepts throw light on your data? How can you extend the theory or methodology as a result of your study? (how does your study help us to think differently about something?)

NARTI Doctoral Colloquium Keele University, June 2014 Before you submit –Send your paper to others to read. –Get to know the journal. Audience and tone. Editorial board. ABS and impact factors. –Enter the conversation in the journal. –Consider non-standard paper formats.

NARTI Doctoral Colloquium Keele University, June 2014 Submitting your paper –Abide carefully by submission guidelines. –Write a ‘short’ letter to the editor pointing out how your paper fits the journal. –Some journals allow reviewer suggestions – if they do suggest one or two.

NARTI Doctoral Colloquium Keele University, June 2014 Dealing with reviewers –MOST papers receive major revisions – don’t be downhearted if this happens to you. –Be as detailed as possible in your response to the reviewers. –Respond directly to each reviewer - think about it as a conversation – most good reviewers see their role as an opportunity to help you improve your work. –Try and turn the paper around within the specified time – if you know you won’t be able to the editor and let them know.

NARTI Doctoral Colloquium Keele University, June 2014 Good luck – publishing is a life long journey …… Developing your writing style Finding your voice Discovering who you are as a researcher
