Hello My Name Is… Introductory Presentation

Opening Activity Think about the following: 1.When you are feeling sad, how do you act? 2.How would someone who doesn’t know you be able to tell when you’re sad?

Opening Activity Someone might know your sad because: You are very quiet You are crying You look upset You stop being social You tell them you are sad

Review Things we do that show our current mood. Actions like crying, smiling, or yelling are signs of how we feel. People understand these because they use the same actions to show how they feel, too.

Preview It’s a lot harder for a robot to communicate what's going on, because it doesn’t know how to act. It is your job as the programmer to come up with a way for the robot to let people know what's going on.

Preview Our robot can communicate with people around it through its display screen and speaker.

Preview: Display Block We can control the NXT’s screen by using our Display block from the Action palette. This way, the robot can show information as text, display data on a chart, or just make a face so we know what it is feeling.

Preview: Display Block To manipulate the Display block:  Choose if you want to Clear the screen  Choose an Action: Image, Text, or Drawing  Depending on your action you can make selections in the bottom screen, and view them in the preview screen

Preview: Sound Block The Sound block allows us to play sound files or tones. Through this, the robot can give us audio cues about what it is doing.

Preview: Sound Block Create the sound you want by:  Selecting Play, Stop, or Repeat  Setting the Volume of the sound  Choosing if the Action will be to play a sound file or a tone, and then making a selection in the File screen

Preview: Sound Block The Sound block is also useful for troubleshooting during programming. If you program the robot to make a sound after each task, then you can keep track of which tasks have been completed successfully.

Preview: Sound Block This program makes a noise once it starts and after 360º of rotation. We can listen for the tone at the beginning to know if the program has successfully started. If we hear another tone, we’ll know it has detected 360º of rotation.

Preview: Sound Block When this program was run, it played one tone and then the robot started turning in circles without stopping. What’s wrong with the program, and how did the Sound block help you figure it out?

Preview: Sound Block The Wait For block is set to detect rotation in the wrong direction! The problem came after the first Sound block, which played correctly, and before the second Sound block, which never played at all.

Preview: Feedback Feedback is the opportunity for others to comment on your work. Feedback helps because it can show you how to improve something in ways you might not have seen.

Preview: Feedback When you gather your feedback at the end of “Hello! My Name Is… “make sure to think about everyone’s responses, not just those you agree with. This is what product designers do to make sure they put out the best possible product.

Now you have the necessary knowledge to get started in the Personality Activity. Good Luck!
