The Process Paper How To …

Definition: The process essay is writing that explains how to do something or how something works by giving a step-by-step explanation.

There Are 3 Steps To The Process Essay 1. Present the Step 2. Explain the Step in Detail 3. State Why the Step is Important.

Two Ways to Approach A Process Paper Directional  How to do something  Gives directions to readers so they can perform the process.  Can be written in second person or third person.  Imperative mood: a command with an understanding subject “you”  Chronological Informational  How something works.  How something occurred.  How to explain a psychological process.  Gain understanding of the process, not necessarily to perform it.  In order of importance

Thesis Statements The thesis sentence in the introduction of a process essay must state the process to be explained and express a point of view (opinion, attitude, or judgment) about that process.

Examples  Directional Teaching someone step by step how to make a turkey and cheese sandwich is essential to building a repertoire of meals that can be made in a kitchen in less then five minutes.”  Informational The seven step writing process can be successfully executed when students are serious about improving their ability to craft well constructed essays.

Do’s & Don’ts  DO follow your thesis statement and make your point!  DON’T use flowery language. Be simple and straightforward.  DO put your feelings aside. Just the facts please!  DO get your facts straight and find supporting data to build ethos in what you’re saying.  DO use who, what, when, where, and why to plan.  DON’T use second person YOU for this paper.  DO write about something that interests you.  DO add warning’s, tips, and what NOT to do.  DON’T forget to take yourself through the process so you can catch any missed steps.  DO use MLA format with a work cited page.

Get With Your Group Your Task: Host a discussion with your group members and talk about something each of you is good at or knows how to do. Can you teach it? What sort of materials would you need to teach a group of 35? Choose your process paper based on a group members knowledge. Start planning. GOOD LUCK!!
