Delaney Forestry Services Specializing in carbon benefit estimation for forest based carbon projects

Entergy Services, Inc Headquarters in New Orleans, LA 2001 initiated voluntary program to stabilize C emissions 20% of emission reductions are to be forestry based (reforestation)

Entergy Services, Inc Own 23,000 acres of forestland in MS, AR, LA, TX Forest carbon baseline stocks with CFI plots Reforestation investment (hundreds of acres per year)

Entergy’s Carbon Sequestration Efforts Reforestation of existing company properties with bottomland hardwoods and pine species Fund reforestation projects through partner organizations:  EPRI, Powertree  US Fish and Wildlife Service

Company (financing) Environmental Organization (coordination) Landowner or Government agency (project area)

Entergy Project Agreements Carbon easements usually around 60 years Company pays for site prep, tree planting USFWS or landowner manages property Coordination with environmental organization to address any problems with growth targets

Carbon benefits Reforestation projects sponsored by Entergy obtain C benefits from sequestration as trees grow Measure trees and in some cases soil (if converting from row crops to trees)

Carbon project costs Typically costs about $200-$250/acre for tree planting. Costs for land acquisition (if necessary) are negotiated on project by project basis. Depends on agricultural value of land but usually in the $600/acre range in the MS river valley. USFWS sometimes splits the costs of land acquisition since land is typically part of their conservation objectives

Carbon targets and costs Total project costs (land acquisition or easement), tree planting, management, carbon measuring and monitoring typically work out to be around $5.00 per ton of carbon dioxide sequestered Aboveground biomass (tree) carbon targets in the Mississippi River Valley are approximately 50 tons of carbon per acre at 60 years of age.

Terrestrial based C projects Carbon benefits are quantifiable Relatively cheap Provide multiple environmental co-benefits  Erosion reduction, habitat restoration
