Co-optimizing solutions for water and food - scoping the nexus challenges in the agro sector and finding scalable business solutions Presentation of the publication By Gary Lawrence, AECOM July 2014

2 WBCSD… A global CEO-led coalition of forward-thinking companies that galvanizes the global business community to create a sustainable future for business, society and the environment. We use thought leadership, effective advocacy, and shared action to generate constructive business solutions for a sustainable world. Membership comprises some 200 companies from 35 countries and 20+ sectors, representing an estimated: 15 million employees 8 USD trillion annual revenues 6 USD trillion market capitalization

3 Challenges at a glance

4 Competing & growing demands for water, energy and food will require us to radically move away from business as usual solutions. Current WBCSD focus on reducing shared water risks, improving water efficiency across key points of the agricultural value chain, reducing food loss and waste from field to fork, restoring productivity to degraded land, building resilience to climate change. Objective: to foster action across companies’ direct operations and value chains in order to sustainably feed more people with less water, in a context of climate change and growing energy demand Companies can contribute towards a cultural shift in the global water footprint of agriculture systems by developing products/ services and implementing solutions at locations under high water stress, without increasing energy consumption and land use. Water - energy – food nexus and climate change resilience Released 20 May smart and scalable solutions to the nexus challenges, highlighting combined benefits on resource use
