Effect of temperature of water on expansion of a balloon The Fellowship of Science Group members: Iris Chau(3) Candy Choi(6) Macrina Lam(17) Ruby Yuen(41)
Introduction This experiment is about the relation between hot air and the expansion of a balloon. We found this from a Science Book, we thought this experiment is very interesting so we chose this as our experiment. Hot air Expansion of balloon ?
Research Question How can the temperature of water affect the expansion of the balloon?
Hypothesis As the temperature gets higher, the balloon will expand more!
Experiment Factors to be changed The temperature of the water Factors to be kept constant The volume of water the type of balloon Factors to be measured The circumference of the balloon The temperature of the water
Apparatus Transparent basin (1) Thermometer (1) Electrical heater(1) Beaker(1)
Materials Balloons (1-2) Glass bottle (1) Ruler (1) Rope (1)
Procedure 1.Get the materials and apparatus needed 2.Set up the apparatus and materials as the picture on the next page 3.Boil the water with the electrical heater 4.Pour the water into the transparent basin
Setting
5. Wait for 1-2 minutes, and then measure the circumference of the balloon. 6. Record the data. 7. Measure the circumference at different temperature, e.g. 80 ℃ 70 ℃ 60 ℃
The relation between the temperature and the circumference of the balloon Temperature ( ℃ ) Trial 1: Circumference of the balloon (cm) The balloon has fallen down Trial 2: Circumference of the balloon (cm) The balloon has fallen down Average (cm) The balloon has fallen down Results(data)
Results(chart) Temperature( ℃ ) Averagecircu, ference(cm) The relation between the temperature and the circumference of the balloon
Discussion Data Analysis According to the graph, the average circumference of the balloon decreases when the temperature gets lower, as the temperature is lower, the circumference is shorter.
Discussion Errors ~ 1. We used different bottle, balloon to do the trial 1 and 2 so there maybe have some difference. 2. The one has to measure the circumference is not the same student
Discussion Improvement ~ measuring tape a rope measure the circumference of the balloon
Conclusion As the temperature gets higher, the expansion of the balloon is more obvious.
