Moving Through the Digestive Tract Write the following questions on a piece of notebook paper. Leave several lines between each question.

Step 1 1. How do you think food moves through the digestive tract? 2. What do you think happens to food as it moves through the digestive tract? 3. Why do you think the digestive tract gets narrower at some places?

Step 2 1. Discuss your answers in your group. 2. Agree on a single answer. 3. Select a spokesperson 4. Share your answers.

1. Follow along as I read to you the procedure for the lab. 2. Select one person from your group and collect supplies for the lab. Open up your book and turn to page 10.

Procedure: In your notebook copy down this chart. Organ Length: cm Mouth11 Esophagus25 Stomach22 Small Intestine 690 Large Intestine 152 Rectum14

Step 2 1. Place the plastic tubing on a flat surface. 2. Unroll about 40 cm of the tube. 3. Using figure 2.3 and the data table as a guide, measure and mark on the tubing the approximate length of each organ of the tube. The opening represents the mouth. Use masking tape to record measurement and labeled organ. 4. Start at the opening (the mouth) and measure 11 cm down from the opening. 5. Label on the masking tape11 cm as the end of mouth.

Step 2 cont. 1. From the 11 cm mark, measure out 25 cm. 2. Continue measuring and marking and writing down each organ on the masking tape until you reach the end opening of the tube. 3. This is the anus 4. Double check your measurements to make sure they are correct. 5. Cut off any extra tubing.

Step: 3a Opening of Mouth: 0 cm End of Mouth: 11 cm

Step: 3b Ending of Esophagus: 36 cm End of Mouth: 11 cm Add on 25 cm Esophagus Beginning

Step: 3b Ending of stomach: Beginning of Small Intestine 58 cm Ending of Esophagus: Beginning of Stomach Add 22 cm

36 58 If you did the measuring correctly, the last number on the roll, should be will be the anus.

Reflection: Answer questions under your chart How was the movement of the tennis ball similar to the movement of food as it passes through the digestive tract? How was the movement of the tennis ball similar to the movement of food as it passes through the digestive tract? How was it different? How was it different?
