COMMUNITY SCHOOLS 101 For School Name Elementary |

WHAT IS A COMMUNITY SCHOOL A community school is a place and a network of partnerships between the school and the community that help children learn, families succeed, neighborhoods engage and communities thrive. With support and resources from the community, community schools care for the whole child – academically, emotionally, physically and socially.

COMMUNITY SCHOOLS AROUND THE NATION Community Schools are supported and guided by two national organizations that exist to build the capacity of schools, districts, community partners and government agencies to implement the community school strategy for student success: National Coalition for Community Schools Institute for Educational Leadership, Washington D.C. National Center for Community Schools Children’s Aid Society, New York City

COMMUNITY SCHOOLS AROUND THE NATION TACSI is part of more than 100 community school initiatives across the country, all addressing the realities that face today’s schools and educators:  Cultural disconnects  Disengaged students  Poverty  Too much unstructured time  Unaddressed health needs  Low attendance and chronic absenteeism  Unsafe school environments  Overburdened and under resourced schools

HOW COMMUNITY SCHOOLS DIFFER Community schools take a “whole child” approach to education, addressing any barriers that may affect a child’s ability to learn. This means there is intention behind every partnership, program and service to ensure no child is overlooked.

HOW COMMUNITY SCHOOLS DIFFER In a traditional school, teaching is what happens. In a community school, we also create the conditions so that teaching and learning can happen.

HOW COMMUNITY SCHOOLS DIFFER In a traditional school, school is for students. In a community school, school is for the students, their families and the community.

HOW COMMUNITY SCHOOLS DIFFER In a traditional school, education is the sole responsibility of the school. In a community school, education is the shared responsibility of the families, the school and the community.
