Leading Disciples in Community SESSION SIX PART II

What are we doing? Making disciples that are being transformed, by God in the gospel.

Multiplying Communities When and why would you multiply a group? What are the indicators? (e.g., size, strategic geography or demography, gospel accessibility)

Without qualified, developing leadership, we cannot multiply healthy developing groups. We need to foster leadership development, within community life. How?

Community Building Block: Coaching

What comes to mind when you hear coach?

Coaching helps people go from where they are to where they want to be. It is an action-oriented partnership that helps people stay focused on the results they want to achieve. (Hawkins, 2005, p.297) The art and practice of guiding a person or group from where they are toward the greater competence and fulfillment that they desire. (Collins, 2001, p. 16) Christian coaching is a focused Christ-centered relationship that cultivates a person’s sustained growth and action. (Miller and Hall, 2007, p. 10) Coaching is an incarnational relationship between one leader and another that is intended to empower his or her life and ministry. (Ogne & Roehl, 2008, p. 26) What is coaching?

It is an intentional relationship for working out the implications of the gospel in a person’s life. This relationship focuses on the transference of: character (being) knowledge (knowing) skills (doing)

What are the primary roles in coaching? KNOW Feed (nourish, inspire, equip) Lead (invest, oversee, guide) Protect (comfort, fight)

Good Questions: The Pathway to Accurately Know, Feed, Lead, Protect Tips for Asking Good Questions: 1. Listen longer than you think. 2. Say ‘Tell me more” and “What else... ?” 3. Ask open-ended questions, primarily. 4. Ask sub-surface questions. 5. Listen closely and summarize. 6. Kill the Me Monster!

With what questions do I start? QUESTIONS TO ASK (AROUND THE 3C’s): WHAT IS GOD DOING? WHAT ARE THE “AHA’S” OR “UH-OH’S”? WHAT ARE THE NEXT STEPS? WHO DO I/WE NEED?

Who could I coach? Community Group members and apprentices Ministry Team members and apprentices Discipleship Group members and apprentices

What do I need to Know? Spiritual Gifts Heart Abilities Personality Experiences

Why do I need to Know this to coach/lead? The example of personality type

How well do you know your own SHAPE? How well do you know the SHAPE of those you lead? How might this knowledge enhance how you lead/coach? What we hope to bring out in those that we lead might best be produced by also knowing what is in those that we lead.

Reflecting on RENOVATE What was the most surprising principle/idea that you learned? What concept has already impacted the way you approach family? Community group? Unbelieving friends, coworkers? Explain. What concepts have you shared with others? Why? What do you wish that we had covered? Who (specific people) would you encourage to take the course next time?
