Definitions So we can know we are on the same page when I am talking. CP Workshop – Definitions.ppt

“Church”  A local group of baptized believers in the Lord Jesus Christ who gather regularly for worship, nurture, and fellowship; and who depart the gathering endeavoring to obey all the commands of the Lord Jesus Christ — transforming families and communities.

“Church Planting”  The process of winning individuals and families to Christ through any and all means that effectively communicate to the culture, then gathering and baptizing them into the Body of Christ for the purpose of being and doing church.

“Church Planting Movement”  Local churches within a people group rapidly and regularly planting multiple new churches within the same people group as a normal part of being and doing church.

“Evangelism”  Taking the Gospel to one’s own people group for the purpose of redeeming individuals and families in such a way that churches are planted and a Church Planting Movement can be started.

“Missions”  Taking the Gospel to a people group that is different from one’s own for the purpose of redeeming individuals and families in such a way that churches are planted and a Church Planting Movement can be started.

“Ministry”  Meeting the felt needs of individuals, families and communities in such a way that the Gospel has an opportunity to be communicated and heard, and evangelism and/or missions can be accomplished.

“Access Ministry”  Ministry that is designed to provide access for evangelists and/or missionaries to an unreached or lost population segment.

“Strategy Coordinator/Catalyst”  The person given responsibility and held accountable for designing and implementing strategies that initiate and nurture a Church Planting Movement in a specific mega-city or among an ethno- linguistic people group, segment of that city or group, or homogeneous unit.

“Cross-Cultural or Foreign (X)”  People from a different culture.  Usually ethnicity and language are different.  Mature Christians are Cross-Cultural and/or Foreign to the World.

“Near-Cultural (>)”  People from a similar culture.  Usually ethnicity and language are similar.  Christians are often Near-Cultural, especially if they are new or not growing.

“Cultural (=)”  People from the same culture.  Ethnicity and language are the same.  Christians are Cultural when they are new and/or carnal.  The gift of Evangelism allows a person to stay in touch with his/her culture and be a growing Christian at the same time.

Cultural Baseline/Change Chart Months as Developing Christian = > X Evangelist Romans 12 1 Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual act of worship. 2 Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

1 Corinthians 9 19 Though I am free and belong to no man, I make myself a slave to everyone, to win as many as possible. 20 To the Jews I became like a Jew, to win the Jews. To those under the law I became like one under the law (though I myself am not under the law), so as to win those under the law. 21 To those not having the law I became like one not having the law (though I am not free from God’s law but am under Christ’s law), so as to win those not having the law. 22 To the weak I became weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all men so that by all possible means I might save some. 23 I do all this for the sake of the gospel, that I may share in its blessings. “Culturally Appropriate”

1 Corinthians 7:17-24 Nevertheless, each one should retain the place in life that the Lord assigned to him and to which God has called him. This is the rule I lay down in all the churches. Was a man already circumcised when he was called? He should not become uncircumcised. Was a man uncircumcised when he was called? He should not be circumcised. Circumcision is nothing and uncircumcision is nothing. Keeping God’s commands is what counts. Each one should remain in the situation which he was in when God called him. Were you a slave when you were called? Don’t let it trouble you—although if you can gain your freedom, do so. For he who was a slave when he was called by the Lord is the Lord’s freedman; similarly, he who was a free man when he was called is Christ’s slave. You were bought at a price; do not become slaves of men. Brothers, each man, as responsible to God, should remain in the situation God called him to. “Culturally Appropriate”

Matthew 23 8 “But you are not to be called ‘Rabbi,’ for you have only one Master and you are all brothers. 9 And do not call anyone on earth ‘father,’ for you have one Father, and he is in heaven. 10 Nor are you to be called ‘teacher,’ for you have one Teacher, the Christ.£ 11 The greatest among you will be your servant. 12 For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted. 13 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You shut the kingdom of heaven in men’s faces. You yourselves do not enter, nor will you let those enter who are trying to. 15 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You travel over land and sea to win a single convert, and when he becomes one, you make him twice as much a son of hell as you are. “Culturally Appropriate”

Amos 5 21 I hate, I despise your religious feasts; I cannot stand your assemblies. 22 Even though you bring me burnt offerings and grain offerings, I will not accept them. Though you bring choice fellowship offerings, I will have no regard for them. 23 Away with the noise of your songs! I will not listen to the music of your harps. 24 But let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream! “Culturally Appropriate”

Ephesians 4: It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, 12 to prepare God’s people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up 13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. “Five-Fold Ministry”

“Apostle” (Ephesians 4:11-12)  One who serves a community by bringing the Gospel  One who serves the church by making disciples and training leadership  One who introduces/trains obedience to God as a core concept and value  One who holds leaders and churches accountable for their obedience

“Prophet” (Ephesians 4:11-12)  One who proclaims the Word of God and declares consequences of obedience and/or disobedience  One who verbalizes in the body what the Holy Spirit has to say to the entire body  One who trains others to be involved in prophetic ministry

“Evangelist” (Ephesians 4:11-12)  One who trains others to win individuals and families to the Lord in such a way that churches are established and a Church Planting Movement is started  One who introduces the concept of obedience to the Word of God to individuals and families

“Pastor” (Ephesians 4:11-12)  One who exhorts the church to be obedient to the Word of God  One who trains others to fulfill the shepherding roles in the church

“Teacher” (Ephesians 4:11-12)  One who teaches the Word of God  One who teaches individuals and the church how to be obedient to the Word of God  One to trains others to teach the Word of God and how to be obedient to the Word of God
