ASTRONOMY The Moon (A.K.A. Luna)

OBJECTIVES By the end of this presentation, students will be able to Explain the causes of five types of eclipses. Identify the Phase of the moon associated with each type of eclipse.

SUN Eclipses If the moon passes a node during a full moon phase, then a lunar eclipse will occur.

SUN Eclipses If the moon passes a node during a new moon phase, then a solar eclipse will occur.

SUN A lunar eclipse occurs once every 186 days. A solar eclipse can occur about two weeks prior to or after each lunar eclipse. Eclipses UMBRA PENUMBRA

SUN Eclipses A lunar eclipse may be viewed about once a year. A solar eclipse may be viewed about once every 300 years from the same location on the earth.

SUN Eclipses A total lunar eclipse occurs when the entire portion of the moon passes through the umbra of the earth’s shadow.

SUN Eclipses A partial lunar eclipse occurs when only a portion of the moon passes through the umbra of the earth’s shadow.

SUN Eclipses A total solar eclipse occurs when the umbra of the moon’s shadow passes over the viewer.

SUN Eclipses A partial solar eclipse occurs when the penumbra of the moon’s shadow passes over the viewer.

SUN Eclipses An Annular solar eclipse occurs when the viewer passes through the penumbra of the moon’s shadow and the moon is near perigee.

SUN Eclipses A Partial lunar eclipse occurs when only a portion of the moon passes through the umbra of the earth’s shadow. A Total lunar eclipse occurs when the entire portion of the moon passes through the umbra of the earth’s shadow. A Partial solar eclipse occurs when the viewer passes through the penumbra of the moon’s shadow. A Total solar eclipse occurs when the viewer passes through the umbra of the moon’s shadow. An Annular solar eclipse occurs when the viewer passes through the penumbra of the moon’s shadow and the moon is near perigee.
