Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion CSSA Summer Institute 2014

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion 2 For Part 2 will emphasis the larger statewide issues related to outcomes funding and the equity lens. We are building upon the voice of the student (from Part 1). The intent of this session is three-fold: 1. To review the We Believe statements as found within the Equity Lens Statement. 2. To review the HECC proposed strategic investments as found in the HECC Budget Questions document – specifically section 3 about the Equity Lens (on p. 3). 3. To reflect and suggest/proposal 3 high level initiatives that would address a specific equity issue at your campus.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion 2 Review the We Believe statements as found within the Equity Lens Statement (30 minutes) Highlight the top 5 statements that resonate with you. Gather into your faculty groups: Engagement, Theory, Application, Identify with your group the top 3 that you can all agree on. Debrief: What were your top 3? Why did you pick these? What kinds of conversations did you have to get to these three?

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion 2 Review the HECC proposed strategic investments as found in the HECC Budget Questions document – specifically section 3 about the Equity Lens (on p. 3). (20 minutes) Community Colleges request $10 million to invest in student support services necessary to help underrepresented students to succeed and complete. In fact, the overwhelming number of part-time students would be better served to either transition to full-time or have more direct career coaching support if a broad program based upon TRIO principles existed. Using the same faculty groups: Engagement, Theory, Application, Identify a set of strategies, programs, or services that you could use to address the need.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion 2 Develop 3 high level initiatives for your campus (30 minutes). Within your same faculty groups - Pick a college: PCC, MHCC, Lane, Blue Mountain, Clackamas or Chemekata. Review the datasheet handout about your college (above). Develop and Identify with your group the top 3 strategies to attend to the needs of students at your campus using as a framework: Your WE Believe statements. Your campus review of data. Knowledge you have about marginalized populations? Debrief and Report: A broad based statement about what your team believes about serving these students, the program that you will deliver, and what outcomes you expect to achieve.
