Sound engineer. A sound engineer uses sound equipment to play back sound effects for a production. They are responsible for knowing each piece of equipment and knowing how to use it. They must create clear cue sheets. They must attend all rehearsals, some of the productions may have complicated sound effects so the sound engineer is expected to start earlier then the rest of the crew. Their average salary is £37,00. they will usually start at about £14,000 and go up to £67,840. Their salary usually depends on their experience, education and location.

Work activities. A sound engineers can be needed for may different productions: O Music recording O Radio O Television O Websites O Computer games What they have to do: O Planning recording sessions O Setting up microphones O Recording each instrument O Mixing tapes O Adding effects

Hours. Sound engineers usually have to be flexible. The hours are long and irregular and are usually late evenings, nights and weekends. They are usually in recording studios which may either be large and air-conditioned or small and stuffy.

Skills. The skills needed as a sound engineer: O Good hearing O Sense of pitch and timing O Patience O Interest in sound and music O Able to cope with long hours O People skills

Example: Here is a profile from stage jobs pro of Piotr Czarnecki, he is a sound engineer from greater manchester. He has undertaken roles such as FOH sound engineer and sound technician on a cruise.

Sound designer. A sound designer is responsible of all sound effects whether live or recorded. They are also responsible for the setting up of the sound equipment. A sound designer needs an imagination to be able to create the sound effects so they are not just rerecorded. They have to read the script and meet the director so discuss the sound design for the production. The average salary for a sound designer is £33,000 per year. Most people in this job move on after 20 years. Experience is essential in this job role.

Comparison. a sound designer and a sound engineer are very similar. The both require the same skills and have the same hours. The only major differences are the average salary they get yearly and sound designers usually change role after a few years where as a sound engineer usually sticks to the job.
