What happens to our food waste? An introduction to Somerset’s KS2 Food Waste Education Pack
Hello, my name is Tom and I’ve just moved to Somerset
I went on a trip with my new school to a landfill site and saw what happens to the rubbish that the bin men collect and I really don’t want to make more waste to have to be buried there.
At home we do our best to recycle our rubbish but I do feel a bit embarrassed by how much we leave out for the kerbside collection each week. How can we reduce our waste?
Where I used to live we had a big garden with a compost bin that we put things like vegetable peelings and tea bags. But we don’t have room for a compost bin in our new garden, it’s really small.
And I have a fussy brother who won’t eat everything Mum puts in his packed lunch.
I know that my new school collects fruit waste for composting, but... What are we going to do with all the rest of our food waste?
I’ve heard that they’re building something called an Anaerobic Digestion plant near Bridgwater. What does an anaerobic digester do?
I’m really hoping you lot can help me find the answers to these questions!
