Illinois Standards Task Force - 5 Steps to Success Kathy Dinger, Former Director of Curriculum and Instruction, Libertyville D70, Libertyville, Illinois

MA DESE is a “LOCAL CONTROL” state, NO MANDATE. SHOULD WE DROP HIGH STAKES TESTING?

TEACHING TO THE TEST LESS CURRICULUM – LESS CREATIVITY - MORE SAMPLE ASSESSMENTS

What is your state saying/doing?

At every crossroad that leads to the future each progressive spirit is opposed by a thousand men appointed to guard the past - Maeterlinck

Change requires continual checking of your stakeholders temperature! ParentsTeachersTech Team

GOOGLE THE RESISTANCE MOVEMENT Assessments were the catalyst for the resistance movement!

About rich literature we must guess We learn less with the common Core mess. Fractions, decimals; for these we press We learn less with the Common Core mess. Endless testing causes stress We learn less with the Common Core mess. Data mining we must address We learn less with the Common Core mess. Fewer concepts – so much commonness We learn less with the Common Core mess. Privatization in excess We learn less with the Common Core mess. Political process ignored/transgressed We learn less with the Common Core mess. As students we will regress Because we definitely learn less with the Common Core mess. We learn LESS with the Common Core Mess!

Ranking Stop Common Core LIKES on FB California – 7800 (multiple pages) Michigan Arizona New Mexico Nevada - 406

Awareness Up 38% - 81% Non-Support Rises to 60% Reasons for Non-Support 77% - Lack of Teacher Prep 68% - Disapprove of National Curriculum and Tests

May 3,2013 – Standards Finalized-uploaded to Google Docs May 8,2013 – Onsite development of preK-5 SBRC May 30, 2013 Onsite training of Vanguard Teachers Sept 14, 2013 – Modifications to SBRC and WIDA

Have you addressed the proper techniques in determining a standards based grade? Ken’s Repair Kit for Grading would be excellent PD or Faculty Meeting discussions. PowerTeacher Gradebook has been designed with these principles. Standardized Curriculum Standardized Grading Practices

include student behavior in grades reduce marks for "work" submitted late give points for extra credit or use bonus points consider attendance in grade determination assign grades by comparing students to each other rely on evidence from poor-quality assessments rely simply on averages use the zero for missing evidence or punishment summarize evidence accumulated over time leave students out of the grading process If any of your teachers: They’d benefit from discussing this book!

If at first you don’t succeed, skydiving may not be for you! The most recent score for all is a 4!

Has your DOE told you what… standards to use? scale to use on assessments? to report to parents? grades to report? NOPE MAYBE Common Concerns

√ √ √ √ √

Should Common Core Standards Impact Scheduling? How many courses are you planning to use for English Language Arts? Reading – Writing – Speaking & Listening - Language

PowerSource Common Core Standards ID 7337 Identifiers- Your Courses, Your Conversion Scales

Consider a user friendly schema for standard identifiers New – Curriculum Materials are showing up with CC identifiers Removing a,b,c will save time- import template and report cards

Other “Standards” Sites/CDE Are we using those that you created last year? What about Specials?

How did it go? What plans are in place for the results?

Secondary Policy Landscape

Focus on teaching, not on testing Train teachers on analyzing the results of their assessments. Continue to modify instruction based on student progress. Prep for the “TEST” by generating your own online assessments especially in non-ELA and Math Classes – frequent tasks reduces nerviness! Change your focus from planning to take an online test to preparing students and staff.
