Verb Patterns There are four verb patterns in English 1- verb + to + infinitive I want to go there I’d like to visit him. The following is a list of such verbs
Want, choose, decide, forget, promise, manage, need, try These verbs are followed by to + infinitive I need to go. He forgot to bring the bag.
2- verb + ing Love, finish She loves studying hard He finished writing the assignment Examples of these verbs are
Love, like, enjoy, finish, hate, stop They enjoy reading He hates coming here She loves swimming
Verb + ing or to + infinitive It began raining / to rain He began studying / to study Start is the same as begin
Verb + somebody + infinitive without to My teacher made me write the assignment twice My parent let me go out when I want
Used + to + infinitive Use to is the same in all persons He used to come early I used to travel early They used to travel early
Negation of used to is did not use to They did not use to smoke I did not use to go there
Form of question with use to What did you use to do? I used to read a lot I used to travel a lot I used to play games
Short answer questions Did you use to smoke a lot? Yes, I did No, I did not
Never is often used with used to I never used to watch TV There is a difference between used to & use Use to expresses habit “ use” is a normal verb which means make use of I used a pen to write
