Maths, Stats and OR: the Glue that Binds Dr Joe Kyle HEA Maths, Stats & OR Network University of Birmingham

STACK... is a powerful tool developed by key workers in the MSOR Network among others that provides inter alia immediate richly mathematical formative feedback. This development is already having a direct and positive impact on the learning experience for many UK HE students and has a growing international following. The talk will illustrate the operation of the system, and describe the potential, through wikis and other means, for the global STACK community to organise and share knowledge.

PG WORKSHOPS... form a UK-wide provision, which features a unique blend of co-active coaching based upon a set of bespoke materials produced by the MSOR Network. While designed especially for those dealing with the particular problems within quantitative disciplines, the model has potential to assist the future aim of impacting directly on student needs in the future in any subject.

CERTIFICATE IN TEACHING STATISTICS IN HE … is an RSS-accredited award for specialist and non-specialist teachers of statistics in higher education institutions in the UK and overseas. The distance learning course concentrates on pedagogy enhancement and is assessed by the completion of a portfolio of activities that is assembled continuously throughout the period of study.

FACTS, FORMULAE AND INFORMATION GUIDES … are in hard copy and electronic format for the use of teachers and students in the mathematical sciences subjects. Numbering over 10, the guides cover materials useful for school-university transition and general and specialist undergraduate mathematics and statistics.

MSOR CONNECTIONS … is the freely available flagship quarterly newsletter read by (?) teachers of the mathematical sciences in the UK and elsewhere.

r-PANEL … is the open source R-based interface for dynamic graphical presentation of data and statistics.

CETL – MSOR CONFERENCES … have become firmly established as the main annual UK events where colleagues can share new and innovative ways to teach the mathematical sciences.

TEACHING STATISTICS THROUGH PROBLEM SOLVING … is an innovative approach for getting students engaged with statistics that reflects how the discipline is practised using real and relevant data in context.
